Diverticulitis is a condition that occurs when small, bulging pouches (diverticula) in the digestive tract become inflamed or infected. These pouches can form in the lining of the large intestine and is commonly diagnosed as a person ages. It affects every 5 in 100 people over 40 and increasing to 60 in 100 people over the age of 80.
The signs and symptoms of diverticulitis include:
Diverticula are believed to form due to naturally weak places in the colon giving way under pressure. Factors that may increase the risk of developing diverticulitis include aging, genetics, obesity, smoking, lack of exercise, and a diet high in animal fat and low in fiber.
Mild cases of diverticulitis can be treated with rest, dietary changes, and antibiotics. Severe or recurring cases may require more intensive treatment, including surgery.
Seek medical attention if you experience constant, unexplained abdominal pain, especially if accompanied by fever and changes in bowel habits.
If your symptoms are significant and diverticular disease if affecting your quality of life, surgery will be recommended. Within the surgery a part of diseased bowel will be removed.
